Indian Institute of Science was established by Jamsetji N. Tata and Swami Vivekananda in 1909. It was originally conceptualized as a Research Institute but after 9 years it was established as a University. India Institute of Science in Bangalore is situated in a 400- acre land which is donated to the institute in 1907. It was still called Tata’s university because of his great sacrifices and generous donations to build this institute.
This Institute caters to the different fields and branches of Science and Engineering. Originally, the institute had only two departments namely, General and Applied Chemistry and Electro-Technology. Not so long, Department of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry were introduced. In 1933, Department of Physics was established when C.V. Raman, a famous physicist became the director of the school. As the institution grows, many new areas of research are formed. They also started their post graduate education offering Master’s Degree and PhD programs in different fields of Science and Engineering. Because of the successful growth of this institution, it is known as the first class research center in India. It has well-equipped laboratories and the best library in India.
This helped in the advancement of India when it comes to Science and Engineering. New discoveries and experiments were first conducted, studied and published here in this institute, and as time passed they also put up post-doctoral programs in Science and Engineering. Currently, Indian Institute of Science has 7 main divisions under two main categories which are Science and Engineering. Degrees offered are classified into two parts which are degrees by research and degrees by coursework. They are now in collaboration with different government and private institutes in India in different outreaches programs. This is to maximize their potential to help and offer Indians quality education in the field of Science and Engineering.
